A free label is a text block on the Front Panel or Block Diagram. It is called free because it does not belong to any specific object as opposed to a regular label.
Attach to object
Since LabVIEW 2013, free labels can be attached to objects on the Block Diagram. This is indicated by an arrow that originates from the label to the attached object. The link is maintained even when the free label - or the object it is attached to - are moved. Whether or not a free label is attached to an object does not affect the object itself.
Bookmarks
Since LabVIEW 2013, free labels can be used as bookmarks for the Bookmark Manager.
